Querying public registry data — this can take up to 30 seconds…

Registry data can lag for some TLDs. UpMonix tracks renewal dates and warns you well before a domain lapses.

What the domain expiry checker shows

Your domain name is rented, not owned outright, and the rental has an end date. Enter a domain, such as example.com or example.co.uk, and the checker asks the public registry data for:

  • Expiry date, with the number of days remaining.
  • Registrar, the company the domain is registered through.
  • Created, the date the domain was first registered.
  • Updated, the last-changed date the registry reports.
  • Status, the codes that describe locks and the domain's state.

Lookups can take up to 30 seconds. Some registries limit what they share publicly or lag behind, so now and then the checker can't return a result. If you see "Unable to retrieve domain registration data", log in to your registrar to see the date. You get 5 free checks without an account, shared across all the UpMonix tools, and 5 more with your email address.

How to read the result

Field What it means What "bad" looks like
Expiry date When the registration runs out unless renewed Weeks away, with no auto-renewal you've checked
Registrar Where renewals are managed A company you don't recognise, or one only a former supplier has access to
Created / Updated Registration history A recent "Updated" date isn't a problem on its own; some registries refresh it often
Status Registry status codes, shown in plain words "redemption period", "pending delete" or "hold"

Common status codes (the full list is published by ICANN):

  • client transfer prohibited (and the delete and update versions): a lock set by your registrar to stop unauthorised changes. This is normal and good.
  • server … prohibited: a similar lock set by the registry itself, often on request for high-value domains.
  • client hold / server hold: the domain has been taken out of DNS, so it won't resolve. Contact your registrar.
  • redemption period or pending delete: the domain has expired and is on its way to being released. Act immediately.

What happens when a domain expires

The details vary by registry and by registrar, so check your registrar's terms rather than relying on a rule of thumb. In general:

  1. At some point after the expiry date, the domain stops working, and your website and email go with it.
  2. There's usually a grace period in which you can still renew through your registrar.
  3. After that, many registries have a redemption period, when getting the domain back is still possible but usually costs more.
  4. Finally the domain is released and anyone can register it.

For .ie domains, the rules are set by the .ie Domain Registry; for .uk, by Nominet.

Common problems and how to fix them

The auto-renew card expired

Auto-renewal only works if the payment goes through. A replaced or expired card is a very ordinary way for a domain to lapse. Check the card saved at your registrar, and set a calendar reminder a month before the expiry date as a backstop.

Registrar emails go to an old address

Renewal reminders go to the email address on your registrar account. If that belongs to someone who has left, or to a mailbox on the domain that's about to expire, the warnings go nowhere. Update your contact address to one that several people can read.

The domain was registered by a former employee or agency

It's common for a web designer or a past staff member to register a domain in their own account. It works until you need to renew, move or prove ownership. Ask for the domain to be transferred into an account your business controls, and keep the login somewhere safe.

When a one-off check isn't enough

Expiry dates are easy to forget because they come round once a year or less. UpMonix tracks your domain's renewal date and emails you well before it lapses, alongside checks on the website, SSL certificate and DNS that the domain supports.

Domain expiry monitoring is included on every plan. The Free plan is free forever for one domain, with no credit card needed. Paid plans add more monitors and more alert channels: see pricing.

FAQ

When does my domain expire?

Enter your domain in the checker above, whether it's a .ie, .co.uk or .com address, to see its expiry date, registrar and days remaining. If the checker can't retrieve the data, log in to your registrar account: the expiry date is shown there. It's worth noting the date somewhere your whole team can see it.

What happens if my domain expires?

Usually the website and email on that domain stop working at some point after the expiry date. Most registrars then allow a grace period to renew, often followed by a redemption period with a higher fee, before the domain is released for anyone to register. Periods and fees vary, so check your registrar's terms.

Why can't the checker find my domain's expiry date?

Registries decide how much registration data they publish, and some limit or delay public lookups, so a result isn't always available straight away. The result can also fail if the domain is misspelled or isn't registered. Your registrar account will always show the correct expiry date.

Will UpMonix remind me before my domain expires?

Yes. Domain expiry monitoring is included on every UpMonix plan, including Free, which is free forever for one domain. UpMonix tracks your renewal date and emails you well before the domain lapses, so there's time to fix a failed payment or an out-of-date registrar account.

Is this tool free?

Yes. You can run 5 checks without an account, shared across all the UpMonix tools, and add your email address to unlock 5 more. Cookies must be enabled. To have your renewal date watched automatically, create a free UpMonix account for one domain.
